1827 Distillery founded Forefather, Jean-Baptiste Lapostolle, built the original distillery in Neauphe-le-Château, a small city outside of Paris, in 1827. It was there that he followed his dream of creating blended spirits from fine Cognac and natural fruits. Still owned and operated by the same family, what started as a modest business eventually gave birth to one of the most iconic brands in the global spirits industry.

Grand Marnier a connoisseur of fine Cognac, Louis-Alexandre Marnier Lapostolle had the innovative idea of blending the smooth complexity of Cognac with a rare variety of orange from the Caribbean called “Citrus Bigaradia”. At the time, oranges were considered a luxury item, exotic and expensive, so the idea of blending them was not only unprecedented, but avant-garde. The still secret recipe is, to this day, the original formula.

Grand Marnier was stocked aboard the White Star Line’s transatlantic liners at the beginning of the 20th century. During the luxurious voyages, passengers enjoyed elegant meals, which finished with a liqueur tasting featuring Grand Marnier. On April 15th, 1912 the ship that had been celebrated as “The Greatest Steamship in History”, the Titanic, sank in the North Atlantic Ocean. A bottle of Grand Marnier that was recovered among the wreckage is now on display at the Titanic Museum in London.
