  2. 2011, Criots-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru, Domaine Blain-Gagnard

    2011, Criots-Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru, Domaine Blain-Gagnard

    Regular Price: $372.00

    Special Price $357.12

    As low as: $329.12

Domaine Blain-Gagnard was formed when Jean-Marc Blain married Claudine Gagnard, daughter of Jacques and Josèphe Gagnard and granddaughter of Edmond Delagrange, resulting in a union steeped in Burgundian heritage. This husband-and-wife team run the domaine, now with the help of their son Marc-Anton, who has returned the France after spending time in the vineyards of Australia and New Zealand.

Jean-Marc employs great intricacy in his winemaking: subtle tweaks to the process such as his discerning selection of coopers and the wood they use, and mixing wines from vines of different ages helps create a series of excellent wines. Jean-Marc uses around 15% new barrels for his premier cru and lesser wines, while the grand crus are afforded 30% new Alliers oak.

The wines tend to be highly concentrated and in quite limited supply: the combination of the older vines with the younger forms wines that are rich and strong.

  3. 2013 Nickel & Nickel Chardonnay, Truchard Vineyard, Napa Valley, California Wine

2013 Nickel & Nickel Chardonnay, Truchard Vineyard, Napa Valley, California Wine

    Regular Price: $89.54

    Special Price $85.95

    As low as: $79.22

Nickel & Nickel winery, located in Oakville, Napa Valley, is dedicated exclusively to producing 100 percent varietal, single-vineyard wines that best express the distinct personality of each vineyard. Established by the partners of Far Niente in 1997, Nickel & Nickel is focused on producing single-vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon from the appellation's most significant AVAs. A small collection of single-vineyard Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah complements the portfolio.

Truchard Vineyard lies in the heart of Carneros, prized for its rolling hills, sun exposure and cool, breezy conditions that allow long, even ripening. Nickel & Nickel makes wine from fourteen select acres of this 270-acre vineyard, composed of volcanic ash and rock with a southwestern exposure. The growing season tends to be long in this cooler area, allowing for fully mature fruit at harvest.

Another remarkable growing season led to an outstanding year in the Napa Valley. A warm, dry spring led to an early budbreak and by bloom, they were ahead of the 2012 growing season by two weeks. The canopies were healthy with a balanced crop load going into the summer. With the exception of one heat spike in early July, the temperatures were ideal for fruit ripening. This vineyard has both east- and west-facing blocks, and the west-facing hills were the first to be harvested.

2013 Nickel & Nickel Truchard Vineyard Chardonnay offers aromas of tropical fruits, vanilla accented by minerality expressive of this vineyard. Pineapple, peach and fig notes offer a mouthful of flavor and blend exquisitely with the spice and toast from the French oak. The wine’s naturally creamy texture and balanced acidity adds weight and richness to the midpalate, carrying the fruit through to a long, lingering finish.

  4. 2012 Newton Unfiltered Chardonnay, Napa Valley, California Wine

2012 Newton Unfiltered Chardonnay, Napa Valley, California Wine

    Regular Price: $87.98

    Special Price $83.58

    As low as: $75.22

Widely acclaimed as a California wine trailblazer, Newton Vineyard was one of the first wineries on Spring Mountain, established in 1977, the vision of founders Dr. Su Hua and Peter Newton, who recognized the potential of Spring Mountain as a prime viticultural region.

Newton’s approach to winemaking is meticulous, using techniques based on an old-world style including natural fermentation and bottling without filtration. The grapes are handled with care, hand-picked in small lots and transferred for gentle pressing to the Spring Mountain cellar. The winery is custom-designed to allow lots from 112 distinct parcels to ferment separately, affording the winemaker an abundance of options when constructing final blends. Barrel aging takes place in a cave built into the mountain directly underneath the winery. The artisan approach pioneered thirty years ago continues to drive the winemaking philosophy at Newton Vineyard today.

2012 Newton Unfiltered Chardonnay, They sourced their Chardonnay from two regions, Carneros and Knights Valley. The 2012 growing season was ideal in every way. Moderate daytime temperatures and cool nights from spring to late summer resulted in slow maturation, allowing the fruit to develop superb complexity while retaining balanced acidity. Unfiltered Chardonnay is 100 percent barrel-fermented using indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for a total of 15 months in French oak barrels, 30 percent of which are new. During maturation every barrel is hand-stirred weekly to resuspend the sediment, a technique that protects the wine and creates added complexity. The individual lots are then blended and bottled unfiltered.

The warm 2012 vintage resulted in a complex, rich and powerful chardonnay with aromas of jasmine, apricot, grapefruit and subtle spice. The palate is fresh with a creamy texture marked by notes of stonefruit, pear and roasted almonds which is complemented by a subtle soft acidity leading to a rich, long and intense finish.

  5. 2011 Mount Eden Estate Bottled Chardonnay, Santa Cruz Mountains

2011 Mount Eden Estate Bottled Chardonnay, Santa Cruz Mountains

    Regular Price: $102.10

    Special Price $97.99

    As low as: $94.10

Mount Eden Vineyards is a small historic wine estate perched at 2000 feet overlooking Silicon Valley, in the Santa Cruz Mountain Appellation, about 50 miles south of San Francisco. Founded in 1945, it is recognized as one of the original “boutique” California winery properties, focusing on small lots of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.  Mount Eden’s lineage of estate bottled Chardonnay and Pinot Noir is the longest in California.  Planted in austere, infertile Franciscan shale on a cool, exposed mountaintop, these low-yielding estate vineyards have consistently produced world-class wines for over a half-century. In 2007 Mount Eden acquired an additional 55 acre wine estate in the Saratoga foothills, which was christened Domaine Eden. Mount Eden Vineyards also produces non-estate Chardonnays from the central coast, primarily Edna Valley. They have great success making Chardonnay from the Wolff Vineyard and are continually recognized as making outstanding wines from that region.

Planted in infertile Franciscan shale, the vineyards are 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean and enjoy a cool, but sunny climate above the fog line. Harvest normally begins in the first weeks of September and finishes around the end of October, occasionally going into early November. The combination of a long growing season and naturally low yields allows slow, steady maturation of the grapes and the concomitant intensification of their flavors. This process is enhanced by vertically training the vines to maximize the exposure of the grape clusters to sunlight and by thinning the crop, when necessary, to ensure yields do not exceed two tons per acre, 1,200 to 2,000 cases per year are produced.

The full-bodied Estate Chardonnay displays fine underlying acidity and a long finish. Hints of cardamom, anise and hazelnut add interest to the core lemon, mineral flavors. Of all Mount Eden’s estate-grown wines, the Chardonnay is most in need of further bottle aging at release, requiring an additional two to four years to fully reveal its true character. Many vintages are still fresh and enjoyable after fifteen years, explaining why Mount Eden Estate Chardonnay is considered one of California’s longest-lived white wines.

  6. 2011 Chalone Vineyard Estate Grown Chardonnay, California Wine

2011 Chalone Vineyard Estate Grown Chardonnay, California Wine

    Regular Price: $48.90

    Special Price $46.93

    As low as: $43.30

Chalone Vineyard is one of the few wineries in the U.S. growing grapes in limestone-based soils, the same as in Burgundy. The spare, well-drained ground, limited rainfall and low crop levels attracted Dick Graff, who wanted to make top-flight Burgundian-styled Chardonnay. Graff made his first vintage under the Chalone Vineyard label in 1966, producing what became a benchmark for California Chardonnay.

2011 Chalone Vineyard Estate Chardonnay, the majority of the grapes for this Chardonnay came from vines that are more than 25 years old. Their oldest Chardonnay vines were planted in 1919 and the most recent in 1999, with a substantial number of blocks planted in the 1970s and 1980s. Robert believes that these mature vines give the estate Chardonnays their quality and typicité. “By typicité, I mean wines that speak of the varietal character and the place that’s Chalone,” explains Robert. “It’s in their mouthfeel, texture, brightness and minerality.” A variety of Dijon clones and field selections add complexity to the wine, including a heritage clone planted in 1972 that gives distinctive floral notes.

Lovely and complex, their 2011 Estate Chardonnay shows the harmonious interplay of minerality and subtle fruit expression found in Chalone Vineyard wines. The exceptionally cool vintage emphasized the distinctive wet-stone terroir character, precise acidity and opulent texture that come from their limestone soils. The delicate fruit and floral notes are elegant and refined, unfolding in layers of white flowers, peach, pear and citrus. Partial malolactic fermentation added hints of crème brûlée to the finish, while sur lie barrel aging seamlessly integrated French oak nuances. As this Chardonnay ages, the fresh, lemony notes in the aromas turn to complex brioche nuances.

2012 Stag's Leap Chardonnay, Napa Valley, California Wine

    Regular Price: $57.98

    Special Price $55.08

    As low as: $49.57

The stag’s leap estate is one of California’s earliest wine estates dated back to 1893, a unique terroir and ideal microclimate support a classical standard of viticulture, land use, and winemaking that is as relevant today as it was over a century ago. An intimate valley within the greater Napa Valley, Stags’ Leap is a place of natural beauty, storied buildings and gardens, a lively history, and a reputation for elegant wines showing finesse and intensity.

In Stags leap winery winemaking is traditional, focused on a pure expression of the land. They didn’t invent winemaking; they just work hard at it. Everything is well-informed by experience and classic winemaking technique, but nothing is rote or formulaic. Decisions are made based on the fruit itself, and the conditions of each and every harvest. Their consistent quality of wines comes from this balancing act. Their wines are well made. They’re delicious, showing finesse and integrity.

2012 Stag’s leap winery chardonnay is a beautifully aromatic wine, with stone fruit flavors of fresh peaches and nectarines mingling with pineapple, a hint of mandarin orange and other citrus fruits. 8. 2012 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Karia Chardonnay, Napa Valley, California Wine

2012 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Karia Chardonnay, Napa Valley, California Wine

    Regular Price: $51.30

    Special Price $49.23

    As low as: $45.40

Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars signature style has often been described as “an iron fist in a velvet glove,” a reference to the artful balance—between ripeness and restraint, softness and structure—that yields wines of exceptional beauty and long life. Achieving that style requires a level of attention to detail found only among the world’s most dedicated wine producers. They pick in small lots and maintain the identity of those lots through destemming/crushing, fermentations, and aging. These distinct lots provide the winemaking team with a rich palette from which to construct each blend. All of their wines aged exclusively in French oak, but they choose from a variety of coopers and forests to achieve the best harmony.

The name KARIA (KAR-ee-ah) is derived from the Greek word meaning graceful, and the 2012 KARIA Chardonnay lives up to its moniker. It shows how grapes from select cool-climate vineyards in southern Napa Valley can be vinified and blended into a seamless integration of fresh-fruit aromas and flavors, crisp acidity and subtle oak spice. Light and graceful: that’s KARIA.

KARIA comes from a tapestry of vineyards in and south of the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. The foundation for this blend is the ARCADIA VINEYARD in the Coombsville AVA in southern Napa Valley and Danika Ranch, our estate vineyard in the Oak Knoll District. Vineyards in Carneros, which are cooled in the mornings and evenings by breezes sweeping north from San Pablo Bay, also contribute to the blend. This air conditioner effect allows grapes to retain natural acidity – which gives wine its refreshment quotient – yet warm afternoons during the growing season allow for slow, steady fruit maturation.

This graceful Napa Valley Chardonnay opens with aromas of pear and apple along with a subtle spice note. The wine has a soft entry and crisp finish with hints of vanilla. There is a nice balance to the acidity and minerality that enhances the freshness and elegance of this wine. Try pairing this medium-bodied Chardonnay with seared scallops with lemon zest, Dungeness crab cakes, or roast chicken.
