Quick Overview

Del Maguey are the first producer to credit each product after the village from where the liquid is made. Del Maguey Chichicapa Mezcal is made from Mezcals of Chichicapa. The village of Chichicapa sits at 7000 feet in a broad valley about thirty miles deep and ten miles wide. The climate is desert yet tropical and suited to growing bananas, guava, mangoes and other exotic fruits. The mezcal to come out of this beautiful village is twice distilled from unblended 100% mature agave Espadin. It has a delicate nose yet it is deep and sweet on the tongue with a long distinctive smoky finish and overtones of mint. Faustino Garcia Vasquez is the maker of Chichicapa. He is a humble and talented craftsman with great respect for the ancient processes. The original packaging of this item is a hand-woven straw basket. Chichicapa is bottled at around 95 proof, though this varies from lot to lot.

Details

Del Maguey (pronounced ma–gay), Single Village Mezcal was founded in 1995 by internationally renowned artist and mezcal visionary, Ron Cooper. Ron introduced the world to previously unavailable 100% certified organic, artisanal mezcal produced the original handcrafted way. Through deep cultural relationships with Zapotec Mexican Indian producers in the remote villages of Oaxaca, Mexico, Del Maguey harnesses ancient, original organic processes. Combining these methods with varying micro-climates and terroir gives each creation its own unique, rich, sweet and smoky character. Every product is made by individual family palenqueros (producers) in old-style villages. Del Maguey is easily recognizable with their beautiful green bottles. Del Maguey Single Village Mezcals are created in extremely small quantities following traditional production methods developed in the 16th century. Del Maguey are the first producer to credit each product after the village where the liquid is made. Del Maguey Single Village Chichicapa Mezcal is made from Mezcals of Chichicapa village which sits at 7000 feet in a broad valley about thirty miles deep and ten miles wide. The climate is desert yet tropical and suited to growing bananas, guava, mangoes and other exotic fruits.  The hearts of the agave are roasted over hot stones in a put in the ground for three to five days while covered in earth, ground to a mash using horse-powered stone mills, and then naturally fermented in wooden vats. The spirit is then created using two slow distillations in wood-fired clay or copper pot stills. The result is unlike any spirit, earthy and stunningly complex, each bottle is a unique experience.
