Quick Overview

Replacing the 10 year-old as the main expression of the Lowland style in the Classic Malts range, this Glenkinchie 12yo is a bit fuller and more complex. This 12 year old is the new entry level bottling from Glenkinchie, released in 2007 to replace the 10 year old. The Glenkinchie distillery was founded in 1837, and today is one of a handful of remaining Lowland producers.

Their 12 year old malt is lightly aromatic, with notes of fresh flowers, lemon, barley, grass and smoke. The palate is crisp but ever so slightly sweet, with flavors of fresh fruits, cut herbs, spicy peat, and a touch of beautifully balanced oak. A sweeter style of Scotch, Glenkinchie is bright gold in colour and very approachable.

Details

The distiller's say this version is 'richer, fuller' and the notes certainly sound like it has an extra creaminess over the 10. South and East of Edinburgh, where the high, green Lammermuir Hills begin to roll more gently north towards the Firth of Forth, lies the farming country of East Lothian. Although it lies not twenty miles from Edinburgh's great castle and the bustle of the Royal Mile, Glenkinchie's quiet surroundings make this tranquil place seem more remote.

Nose:
Very aromatic and flowery overall, like breathing in a country garden. Noticeable vanilla, cut flowers and beneath these, a clean, toasty note. Becomes increasingly sweet and creamy, with a lightly aromatic edge and fresh citrus, which all brings to mind lemon cheesecake. Water makes it still more creamy and scented.
Color: Pale gold.
Body: Light and smooth with a sweet, soft start becoming flowery.
Palate:      A sweet, soft start, like crème anglaise, soon becoming flowery again. A really smooth delivery, especially after adding a drop of water. The mid palate is crisp and then the flavor settles into a tightly focused bundle of butter-icing, lemon cheesecake and freesias.
Finish: Herbal and drying slightly, as if it were pot pourri.
